For about the past month I’ve been unemployed while I wait to start my new full-time job (one of the downsides to working for film festivals is that most jobs are only contracted a few months so you usually have some employment gaps throughout the year), I’ve tried to keep busy and tackle some things on my to do list but still feel like I should have used this time more effectively as I spent much of it on the sofa surfing the web. But I’m not going to dwell in what I could have done and instead focus on the things I completed:
Our apartment is on the small side and it’s never felt right in terms of furniture layout, but a few weeks ago I rearranged the office area and suddenly it’s like a whole new space. I really love it now and sit at the desk often in the mornings and afternoons while having my breakfast or lunch. It’s really amazing what a difference it makes.
DIY Juice Cleanse:
I had wanted to try a juice cleanse for a while but could never really fork out $150+ for the Blueprint or Suja cleanses. I did some research and found recipes for both companies juices online, bought a few supplies (mason jars and a nut milk bag), and stocked up on fruits and veggies. The whole thing including supplies cost me about $55 and went pretty well, it took me about an hour each day total to make all 6 juices (I don’t have a juicer so I was using a VitaMix and a nut milk bag to separate the juice from the pulp). What I loved about doing it myself is that I could customize the juices a bit to better suit my tastes. I’m surprised at how relatively easy it all was and would definitely consider doing it again.
Here are the rough formulas I used to make my juices:
1. Green Juice – 3/4 cup water, 2 Apples, 6 Kale leaves, 1 Lemon, Handful of Parsley, and 1 Handful of Spinach.
2. Carrot, Apple, Orange – 1/2 cup water, 6 carrots, 1 orange, 1 apple, slice of pineapple, 1 lemon, 2 inch piece of ginger and ¼ teaspoon turmeric.
3. Kale, Apple, Lemon – 3 apples, one bunch of kale (about 10-12 leaves) and 1/2 a lemon.
4. Spicy Lemonade – 14 oz water, 3 lemons, A few dashes of Cayenne Pepper, 1 TBSP of Agave Nectar
5. Carrot, Apple, Beet – 1 apple, 2 beets, 3 carrots, 1 1/2 TBSP Ginger, 1/2 oz of lemon juice.
6. Cashew Almond Milk – 16 oz water, ¼ cup Almonds, ¼ cup Cashews, 1 TBSP Agave, ¼ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp vanilla and ⅛ tsp nutmeg.

Making almond cashew milk:
Apparently making your own almond milk is the blogging thing to do now both Door Sixteen and Honey Kennedy have featured posts with the same recipe from Oh She Glows. I had just come off the cleanse where I was making cashew almond milk so I gave this recipe a try. It’s a great all around almond milk that could be used for almost anything. While I loved the subtle flavors in that one, I’m partial to the almond cashew milk I was making on the cleanse. It’s got vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg which really boosts the flavor for me and the cashews make it extra creamy. I love to just drink this on its own.
Here’s my recipe:
– 3 1/2-4 cups water (depending on how creamy you want the milk)
– 1/2 cup Almonds
– 1/2 cup Cashews
– 4-5 dates or TBSP Agave
– 1/2 tsp cinnamon
– 1/2 tsp vanilla
– 1/4 tsp nutmeg
1. Soak almonds and cashews in filtered water overnight (at least 6 hours).
2. Drain soaking water and add all ingredients to your blender (I used a VitaMix).
3. Blend on the highest setting for about 1 minute.
4. Pour into a nut milk bag and squeeze over a large bowl until all the milk has filtered through.
5. Pour milk into a jar or pitcher that you can shake before using because the mixture will separate in the fridge. It will stay good in the fridge for about 3-4 days.
I’m really surprised by just how easy it is to make. It takes about 10 minutes and the results are delicious. This is definitely something I’m going to keep doing because I love how I know exactly what is going into it.
Movies, Movies, Movies:
As usual I spent a fair amount of time watching movies at home but had some really incredible theater going experiences this month including seeing my first Cassavetes film, SHADOWS, in NYC with the lead actresses present, watching THE GRANDMASTER at the Academy preceded by a conversation with Wong Kar-wai, seeing Antonioni’s L’AVVENTURA for the first time on a pristine 35mm print, and finally seeing Bruce Lee’s ENTER THE DRAGON at the Cinerama Dome. I also caught up with some classics that I had never seen at home, JAWS, SCARFACE, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, and MANHATTAN.
This is more recent but I spent nearly 17 hours on Wednesday and Thursday working on designing this here blog. In the past I have done a bit of work on websites, this is my first time working in WordPress and I am really out of practice with Photoshop. It was nice to get back into it. I learned a lot through the support forums and through trial and error and it was very rewarding to see the blog come together after a long day of work. There is still more I want to do but I’m really happy about where it is now.
I’ve got one week left before I start my new job and am planning on spending the week giving the apartment a good deep cleaning and tracking down a vintage desk lamp and a few tchotchkes for my desk at work.
